Drive east on I-40 from Albuquerque and the road climbs into Tijeras Canyon, between the Sandia and Manzanita Mountains. The village of Tijeras sits at the mouth of that canyon, well above the city, and the difference in weather is easy to feel. Winters are colder, snow sticks around longer, and nights freeze more often.

The best defense is to seal cracks in the fall, before the first real snow, and to look the house over again once the snow is gone. Pay attention to walls on the north side and in the shade of the canyon walls, since they stay frozen longest. Wood-framed homes deserve an extra look near the ground, because moisture that gets behind the stucco can reach the framing. A quick walk around in April catches most problems while they are still small repairs.
